CHURCH LANE, LEDBURY

BUTCHER ROW HOUSE AND BURGAGE HALL

Preserving history for the future

The society

Ledbury is a lively market town in rural Herefordshire. It has a wealth of buildings of architectural importance.

Ledbury Civic Society exists to promote the town’s heritage, keeping it relevant to the life of the community. It’s our heritage that attracts visitors and their business, and makes us proud of our town.

Church Lane with its cobbles and wealth of historic properties owes its continued existence to the Civic Society’s work. Demolition and the dreaded ‘tarmac’ have been threatened over the years.

BURGAGE HALL

Butcher Row House

This is a sixteenth century timber-framed house. In 1979, we oversaw its disassembling and the rebuild on its current site in Church Lane. The Civic Society owns and looks after the house.

It was part of a row of 15 houses and shops, right in the middle of town. The row was bought by public subscription in 1830. Most were demolished but not all. Butcher Row House used to be in the back garden of 14 High Street.

It is now home to the Butcher Row House Museum, open each summer, with annually over 15,000 visitors.

LEDBURY'S LISTED

Two Grade I listings, Church of St Michael and All Angels and Ledbury Park. Plus 22 Grade II* properties. The star means, “particularly important buildings. They usually have extra merit such as outstanding interiors.” And more than 220 Grade II buildings, 245 in total. Most in the town centre.

Burgage Hall

Built as a Congregational Church in 1852. Fell into disuse. The Society restored it in 1985. It is regularly hired for events. The name, ‘Burgage’ refers to burgage plots, narrow strips of land in a medieval town. Access was by alleys. Ledbury is full of them!

Entrance to the hall is off Church Lane by Butcher Row House. The imposing front facade can be seen by walking down the alley by the newsagents, opposite the Market House.
